Louis-Charles-Antoine Desaix (17 August 1768 – 14 June 1800) was a prominent French general and military leader during the French Revolutionary Wars.
Born near Riom in Auvergne, France, into a noble family, Desaix entered the Royal Military School of Effiat at age eight.

Unlike many of his aristocratic peers, Desaix refused to emigrate during the Revolution and chose to serve the Republic, rising rapidly through the ranks to become a division general by 1794.

He served with distinction on the Rhine, commanding the fortress of Kehl and leading forces in Germany.

In 1798, he joined Napoleon Bonaparte’s expedition to Egypt, fighting at the Battle of the Pyramids. His fair and just administration of Upper Egypt earned him the local title of the "Just Sultan".

He returned to Europe in 1800 and joined Napoleon in Italy. At the Battle of Marengo on 14 June 1800, Desaix led a timely counter-attack that turned a near-defeat into a French victory, though he was killed in action by a musket ball at the age of 31
