A 1912 Officer's Pattern Cavalry Sword, Geo Vth Cypher Blade Etching, Indian Made

With FS scabbard, typical regulation large bowl guard fully engraved and nickel plated. Plate wear throughout the hilt. Fully etched blade with King George Vth cypher.

The 1908 Pattern Cavalry Trooper's Sword was the last service sword issued to the cavalry of the British & Indian Army. It is widely considered the most effective cavalry sword ever designed, although ironically its introduction occurred as swords finally became obsolete as military weapons, except in Indian service were their use was far more prolific.

The 1912 Pattern Cavalry Sword was introduced for officers, who had previously carried privately purchased non-regulation swords. The 1912 Pattern Sword was essentially the same look as the 1908 trooper’s Pattern but featured more hilt decoration. The trooper’s version also had a hardened rubber grip. This Indian made version has a differing grip covering to the standard British made version and its pommel shape is smaller.

We acquired this handsome sword from the daughter of a former British, Indian Army cavalry officer, as this was sword he used in service with the 16th Light Cavalry. The sword maker supplied their officers from stores in Calcutta and Delhi

Blade 34.75 inches and extra long. Overall worn and used condition but still good. Leather field service combat scabbard in excellent condition, with typical elongated nickel chape typical for Indian Combat Service, {British service chapes were almost always leather} A good, mostly pitting free blade.
